Everything you need to know about Mini-Splits

Mini Split systems are gaining a lot of popularity in the market, and for good reason!

They are compact, energy efficient, and have multiple indoor unit types to fit your aesthetic preferences.

They're also fairly easy to install, but do require special equipment to install correctly.

Here are some common questions we get asked about Mini Split A/C systems:

Do they fail often?

Mini Splits often get a bad rap because they're the most popular Do It Yourself option, and many homeowners install them without pressure testing or pulling a vacuum. This can result in refrigerant leaks and also results in a contaminated system from the start. Installing a Mini split incorrectly is the number one reason they fail. Getting your system installed by a qualified professional can avoid all of these issues.

Are they noisy?

Even the cheapest brands of Mini Splits are whisper quiet compared to traditional full sized split systems, you can barely hear the condenser outside eve when you're standing right next to it! If you're sensitive to excess noise in your atmosphere, Mini Splits could be a great option for you.

Can they provide both heating and cooling?

Mini Splits are heat pump systems, so they provide both heating and cooling.

Are they expensive?

Mini Split systems can be much more affordable than traditional split systems or package units. The most common type is also ductless, meaning you don't have to pay the initial installation cost of installing ductwork in the space you need cooled. They are also more energy efficient, so you'll save money on the cost of running them long term as well.

Can I install a Mini Split in my garage?

As far as Arizona is concerned, Mini Splits are one of the only reasonable legal options for garage installation. It is illegal to add air vents from your main house HVAC system to your garage because of the potential for fumes from vehicles or other equipment to be recirculated into your home. Luckily, Ductless minisplits are perfect for the job, and they circulate all the air at the indoor head location, making them completely legal to install in the garage, and one of their most popular applications!

Can I install my Mini Split myself?

There are a few brands designed for DIY installation, but the issue, as mentioned above, is you need nitrogen to do a proper pressure test and a vacuum to ensure there are no contaminants, otherwise you may experience problems in the near future. Other than the need for specialized equipment the installation is fairly straight forward and can be completed with minimal electrical and construction knowledge. There are also plenty of video tutorials online to help you do the job correctly.
